David Smith

Passed away unexpectedly Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Borgess Hospital with his family by his side. David was born October 7, 1941 in Kalamazoo the son of Victor and Mary (Cook) Smith. Prior to his retirement he worked for a short time with Gibson Guitar Company, and then 30 years in the elevator business with National Elevator Trade, Independent Elevator, and Otis Elevator. David was an avid race fan and enjoyed Kalamazoo Speedway, the M-40 Speedway, and all NASCAR events. On November 28, 1963 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Barbara Pohl, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Jeff Smith, Scot (Kim) Smith, Mike (Sandy) Smith; three grandchildren, Michaela, Nash, and Addison; a brother, Jerry Smith; and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Altora; and in-laws, Robert and Virginia Pohl. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may meet the family Friday from 12:00-1:00 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre where a memorial service will be held at 1:00 with Pastor Jim Dyke officiating.
